Vicar Water Country
Park was officially opened in 1982 and provides facilities for fishing,
walking, cycling and a visitor centre in Rumbles cafe where you can get refreshments and
information. The free car park is open during daylight hours, there is a
ticket machine where a voluntary £1 donation can be made.
The park is situated off the (B6030) Mansfield Road at Clipstone, just a
few miles from Mansfield.
Vicar
Pond, in 1870 the
5th Duke
of Portland dammed Vicar Water to create Vicar Pond for use as a fishing
lake and was also used to stock his lakes at Welbeck Abbey, during the
early 1900's the pond was used for swimming and boating.
Clipstone Colliery headstocks, the colliery opened in 1922 and closed in 2003.
The winding towers are 65 metres high amongst the highest in Europe.
A
small pond next to the car park, can be used for feeding ducks and
sometimes for sailing model boats.
